What the Icacos island catamaran tour from Fajardo includes

The boat is the Barefoot IV, a sailing catamaran that leaves Villa Marina in Fajardo and anchors off Cayo Icacos, about 1.5 nautical miles northeast of the coast. Check-in is 8:30 a.m. at the latest and the sail out runs about 45 minutes. The day lasts 5 hours, costs from $138 per adult and carries a 4.8 ★ rating from 2587 reviews, in groups of up to 44.

Lunch is a sandwich buffet: cold cuts, cheeses, tuna, chicken, pasta, green salad and fruit salad, with vegetarian options already in the spread. Bottled water, sodas, pina coladas and rum punch are poured on board, snorkel gear is provided, and local taxes and fees sit in the price. Beach toys such as volleyballs, footballs and paddles come out along with the flotation belts, subject to availability. Towels and gratuities are not included, so pack your own towel. Food allergies have to reach the operator at least 48 hours before departure, and for any other dietary restriction you contact the operator straight after booking.

Cayo Icacos is uninhabited and has nothing on it: no restrooms, no drinking water, no food stand, no trash collection, no shade beyond the palms and sea grape bushes, and no lifeguards, so swimming and snorkelling there are at your own risk. The bathroom on the catamaran is the only one you will see all day. Carry your rubbish back aboard with you. The cay lies inside the La Cordillera reef nature reserve, designated on 2 January 1980 and administered by Puerto Rico's Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales since 1991.

After lunch the catamaran moves to the shallow reef south of the cay, the water DRNA maps as the catamaran zone, where the usual stop is in about 18 to 25 ft. These reefs hold 83 fish species in 33 families and 39 stony coral species, including endangered staghorn coral in the shallows. Keep your fins off the bottom, do not touch the coral and do not stand on the reef: DRNA observed roughly a third of snorkellers kicking, touching or disturbing something.

Pick your dates on the early side of the year if you can. January through March is the calmest and clearest window, sargassum builds through spring and peaks in June or July, and the crowd on the cay climbs to a 2:00 p.m. high of about 598 people an hour across the study zones, which an 8:30 a.m. check-in beats comfortably. One rule catches people out: Administrative Order 2025-02, signed 10 March 2025, bans high-volume sound systems on boats and in the reserve's beach zones, with fines reaching $25,000 and the Cuerpo de Vigilantes on patrol.
